![]() With Apple’s transition to the M1 processor in 2020, the company decided to not develop Boot Camp for the M-series Macs. ![]() 2006 also was the year that Apple switched from PowerPC processors to Intel, and since Windows runs on Intel silicon, Apple was able to provide the benefit of running Windows (as well as Linux) natively on Mac hardware–though Apple always reminded users that it did not provide support for Mac hardware running non-Mac operating systems.Īpple’s M-series chips use the Arm architecture, which is different from the x86 architecture in Intel processors, so the version of Windows that runs on Intel PCs will not work on M-series Macs. Parallels International The final nail in Boot Camp’s coffinīoot Camp became an official part of the Mac operating system in 2006 as part of Mac OS X Leopard. Microsoft has authorized Parallels as a solution for running Windows for Arm on an M-Series Mac. (When I asked Microsoft PR about unauthorized VMs, they referred me to the beforementioned support document and said that they have nothing further to share at this time.) The only other authorized option for running Windows on a Mac is to use Microsoft’s Windows 365 online service and run a Cloud PC. VMware Fusion, QEMU, and other virtual machines don’t offer a way to get Windows for Arm (though they can run it), and these VMs appear to be still unauthorized. Microsoft does not sell Windows for Arm as a standalone product, but you can download and install Windows 11 directly through Parallels. Microsoft’s announcement specifically names Parallels as an authorized solution. The authorization is a big deal because it means that in business environments, Parallels and Windows on Arm can be deployed, and users can get support if they run into problems. The problem with Creative Cloud Desktop app seems specific to Mac OS guests on Apple Silicon hosts. However, on Thursday Microsoft announced through a support document that Parallels Desktop 18 is now “authorized” to run Arm versions of Windows 11 Pro and Windows 11 Enterprise on M1 and M2 Macs. There was a server-side bug recently installing LR 12.3, but that got fixed fairly quickly. I frequently run the Creative Cloud, Lightroom Classic, and Photoshop on a Windows 11 ARM guest on a Parallels / Apple Silicon host, and it runs fine. "make sure Adobe CC can run in a virulized environment." ![]() You can disable auto-updates of the Creative Cloud Desktop app via the setting Preferences > General > Automatically Keep Creative Cloud Up To Date. "Besides this, Adobe CC automatically update and there's no way to circumvent this since" ![]() Given the rudimentary state of Parallels support for running Mac OS guests on Apple Silicon, I'd bet that the problem with running the Creative Cloud Desktop app is a bug in Parallels rather than the app. It seems that framework is very limited in capabilities (typical Apple): On Apple Silicon hosts, Parallels has to use Apple's virtualization framework to run Mac OS guests. That's clearly a bug in Parallels - an app should never be able to cause a virtual machine to crash / shutdown. "As it stands currently, the moment LR Classic is opened the VM completely shuts down and restarts." However, I'm able to run Lightroom Classic 12.3 by copying it from /Applications/Adobe Lightroom Classic/ on the host to the guest. When I try to launch it from Launchpad or the menu bar, a Creative Cloud process starts, but the app window never appears. I too can't run the Creative Cloud Desktop app in a Mac OS 13.3.1 guest on a Parallels 18.2.0 / Mac OS 13.3.1 / Apple Silicon host. Either Adobe needs to allow Adobe CC to run behind, or needs to make sure Adobe CC can run in a virulized environment. I've tried installing a previous version of LR Classic, however, this still automatically updates Adobe CC, which in turn crashes the full VM again.Īs Adobe pushes the upgrade for CC automatically, there's currently no way to run ANY LR Classic on a virtualized OSX. I'm currently trying to upgrade my OS to see if that makes any difference, who knows.Īs it stands currently, the moment LR Classic is opened the VM completely shuts down and restarts. ![]() VM: OSX 13.2, Apple M1 Pro (Virtual), 16GB RAM (Virtual), case sensitive due to Adobe VM: Virtualized through Parallels 18.2.0 Main machine: Macbook Pro 2021, 14 inch, M1 chip, 32GB RAM, OSX - Ventura 13.3.1, operating system itself set up as case insensitive due to company role of the laptop. Besides this, Adobe CC automatically update and there's no way to circumvent this since Adobe CC is completely integrated to all other adobe programs. I'm currently running a VM of a Case Sensitive Mac OSX on top of a Case None Sensitive Mac.Īdobe Creative Cloud is completely broken on VM in the last version and can't be opened. ![]()
